In Memphis, Jackson Jr. showed off his defensive presence near the bottom of the goal from the first quarter and induced many turnovers from opposing ball handler Russell. It broke the Lakers’ defense as it connected to Kennard and David Rody’s outer guns. Memphis finished the first quarter with a 30-19, 11-point lead as bench players played and even Bain scored 10 points.
The Lakers seemed to close the score gap with Lebron’s effort at the beginning of the second quarter, but after being hit by 3-pointers from Kennard and Jackson Jr., they gave up an easy point to Tillman and allowed a 10-4 score run. Davis still boasted overwhelming rim protection, but Jackson Jr. balanced it out with a similar presence. Memphis ended the first half with a 59-44, 15-point lead.
Tillman boasted a highly sensitive field goal sense at the beginning of the third quarter, but as Memphis players committed several offensive fouls, he provided the Lakers with the power to pursue. With multiple post-ups against the likes of Brooks and Roddy, LeBron single-handedly led the Lakers’ offense. Then, the Lakers players all started to come alive together, producing points to chase with a 19-7 score run. However, with Roddy and Kennard making 3-pointers, Memphis entered the 4th quarter with a 12-point lead, 83-71.
Even in the fourth quarter, the Lakers used Lebron’s post-up as their main weapon. However, Jackson Jr. perfectly blocked Vanderbilt, who received a pass from under the goal. In the end, the Lakers started the lineup without Vanderbilt. Lebron cleverly induced Brooks’ fifth foul, and Reeves also connected it with a corner 3-pointer. However, with Tillman reappearing, Memphis kept the score to around 10 points.
Then, after helping Davis score a cut-in, LeBron led the team to a two-possession game with a self-designed in-pound pattern score and paint zone score. When Bain responded with a series of free throws, the Lakers’ shooting sensation cooled. Afterwards, Tillman and Jackson Jr. made offensive rebounds and even Jones scored a wedge. Thus, Memphis defeated the Lakers by 103-93, 10 points.
