LG improved to 61-2 with a 17-8 win in the 15th game of the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League against the Kiwoom Heroes at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul on Wednesday. Kiwoom, on the other hand, fell into a four-game losing streak as they failed to overcome a large deficit despite hitting all of their starters. Their season record is 42 wins, 3 draws and 62 losses.

Kim Dong-gyu’s starting debut, which lasted less than two innings

Kim Dong-gyu, who joined Kiwoom from LG in a trade on the 29th of last month, made his first first-team appearance after switching teams. Not only did he have to take on a starting role, but he also had to face his hometown team, so the pressure was even greater.

LG aggressively targeted Kim from the start of the game. After a leadoff single by Hong Chang-ki, a walk by Shin Min-jae, and a single by Kim Hyun-soo, three consecutive batters reached base with no outs, and a wild pitch by Kim Dong-gyu and a sacrifice fly by Austin scored two runs. The score was 2-0.

Kiwoom fought back. In the top of the second inning, Kim Hwijip and Lim Byung-wook singled to put runners on first and third, and then Kim Hwijip scored when Jeon Byung-woo grounded out to the third baseman, and Lim Byung-wook scored from second when Kim Dong-hyun singled up the middle to tie the game at 2-2.

However, LG’s bats continued to heat up in the bottom of the second inning. Leadoff hitter Park Dong-won hit a three-pitch fastball from Kim Dong-kyu for a solo shot over the left field fence to regain the 3-2 lead. Lee Jae-won’s single and Hong Chang-ki’s walk put runners on first and third, and a double steal by both players and an RBI single by Shin Min-jae brought in two more runs. The score was 5-2. Eventually, Kim Dong-gyu was unable to hold on any longer and had to hand over the mound to Yang Hyun before the end of the inning.

7 runs in the bottom of the third inning, tipping the scales in favour of LG

After removing their starter from the mound, LG scored seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to take an early lead. Leadoff hitter Austin reached base for the second consecutive game and scored on a single by Jung Ju-hyun and a double by Moon Bo-kyung.

With the bases loaded, Park Dong-won shook things up with a surprise bunt, and Lee Jae-won’s RBI single on a bases-loaded 1-3 pitch brought in another run. A throwing error by second baseman Kim Hye-sung on Hong Chang-ki’s grounder to second loaded the bases, and LG completed the double-digit scoring with an infield single by Shin Min-jae and a sacrifice fly by Kim Hyun-soo. Austin’s two-run single extended the lead to 12-2.

Kiwoom got one run back in the top of the fourth when Lee Yong-gyu’s grounder to first base scored Lee Joo-hyung from third, but LG scored one run in the bottom of the inning on Park Hae-min’s sacrifice fly to extend the lead back to 10 runs.

One more big inning, LG not letting their guard down

Kiwoom extended its lead in the top of the fifth when Jeon Byung-woo’s grounder to the first baseman allowed Song Sung-moon to score from third, and Kim Dong-heon followed with an RBI single. In the top of the seventh, a run scored on an error by third baseman Kim Min-sung, who failed to catch a grounder from Jeon Byung-woo at first base.

LG did not stand still. In the bottom of the seventh, Kim Hyun-soo and Austin singled and Jung Joo-hyun walked, then Kim Min-sung and Heo Do-hwan scored on consecutive groundouts. Lee Jae-won completed the big inning with an RBI single, making the score 16-6.

Kiwoom kept their hopes alive in the top of the eighth inning with an RBI single by Lim Byung-wook, but LG ended the opposition’s chase with Hong Chang-ki’s first home run of the season in the bottom of the inning.
