Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, 46, has resigned as head coach of PSV Eindhoven at the end of the season.

He took the helm of his hometown team in March last year. But after just one season, he chose to part ways.

Van Nistelrooy informed the players of his resignation before leaving. Eindhoven host AZ Alkmaar on Aug. 28 in their final Eredivisie match of the 2022-2023 season.

Second-placed Eindhoven, who are three points ahead of third-placed Ajax (69 points), need just one more point to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League. The Eredivisie title this season was won by Arne Slott’s Feyenoord.

However, Van Nistelrooy’s departure ahead of the final game came as a shock to everyone. Van Nistelrooy steadied the ship in the January transfer window, despite the loss of striker Kodály to Liverpool.

The former Wolves striker, who also played for Manchester United and Real Madrid in his playing days, won the Dutch Cup and the Johan Cruyff Shield this season, setting the stage for a successful coaching career. However, a falling out with the club left him with the stigma of being dismissed in disgrace.
